Prior to scheduling an initial appointment, clients will first receive a complimentary 15 minute phone consultation to discuss treatment needs.

The intake period is an opportunity for both therapist and client to collaborate on goals, treatment planning, expectations, and fit. It is also an opportunity to go over rates and insurance. Once scheduled for an intake session, clients will be provided e-documents of initial paperwork through email (or they can be accessed here).

We do not accept walk-ins nor are we set-up for crisis situations requiring immediate assistance. We do not have a psychiatrist on premises.

Invest in yourself!

Most of us don’t think twice before carefully selecting our hairdresser, personal trainer, acupuncturist, favorite bar, etc., based on the relationship and quality of service. We see these services as in investment in our well-being and comfort. Finding the right therapist is no different! In-depth therapy, especially when working through past trauma or interpersonal difficulties, requires a safe, collaborative relationship through which these painful experiences can be addressed. This is why it’s so important that you take your time. Meet with several people. Don’t limit yourself based on external constraints. Find who’s right for you! Your decision to invest in such a vulnerable relationship should be based on what fits your needs, rather than convenience or because your insurance company dictates it for you.

Using insurance

As with most things, using insurance to cover your session costs comes with both benefits and consequences. Obviously, many people are able to attend therapy  because their insurance covers most or all of the costs. At the same time, insurance companies put many constraints on your treatment, including length of treatment and diagnoses covered. This can decrease your overall quality of care. When a provider is in-network, they essentially work for the insurance company. They can periodically conduct audits and  have access to treatment notes and diagnoses, which limits your confidentiality. Lastly, it is important to understand that once diagnosed, this will become a part of your health record for life. For most, this doesn’t matter; for some, however, this can impact issues such as future insurance coverage, security clearance, and immigration issues.

We are considered an out-of-network provider with most insurance companies (check out this article from ZenCare on using out-of-network benefits!). If you have out-of-network benefits, you will be provided with all the necessary paperwork on a weekly basis to submit for partial or full reimbursement for services should you choose go through your insurance.

Clients also can use pre-tax funds to pay for services through the use of a Healthcare Flexible Spending Account. We do everything we can to ensure that therapy remains affordable for you. If we can’t figure something out based on mutual needs, then we are happy to refer you to sources that might better meet your needs (see here for low-cost clinics throughout the city).
