Is telehealth actually helpful?
Yes! Research has consistently shown that video therapy can be as useful as in-person therapy for many people experiencing a range of issues. At first, it may seem pretty weird to open up to someone without actually ever meeting them. But, like most things, you do get used to it. In fact, some people find that doing therapy from the comfort of their own space or with that built in distance actually helps them open up more. Of course, not everyone benefits from the same things, and online therapy isn’t for everyone.
Who benefits from teletherapy?
Like most things in therapy, who benefits from what at any given time is highly individualized. In general, most people who benefit from in-person therapy will also find similar benefits from teletherapy. Remote sessions can also be valuable for those who have mobility issues or certain medical limitations.
Online counseling can be particularly helpful for people struggling with things like:
- Work stress
- General anxiety
- Life transitions
- Mild depression or panic
At the same time, the therapy office can provide a structure, a safe space away from home and the hectic outside world to open and leave your problems, and the face-to-face intimacy that video conferencing can never quite replace. People who struggle with interpersonal relationships, intimacy issues, suicidal impulses, hearing voices, and/or a history of trauma may need more focus on in-person sessions that build on the non-verbal and safe relationship with a therapist. It all has to do with what you find most important and what your individual needs may be.
How does teletherapy work?
All sessions are done through our HIPAA-compliant video software, which is also the same system that houses your financial and insurance information, scheduling, and session notes. On the day of your appointment, you will receive an email with a link that takes you straight to the session. It’s that easy!
You can also use your phone or tablet, which will require you to first download a free app. This allows you the freedom to conduct sessions anywhere that provides you the privacy and flexibility you need, such as taking a walk, going to a park, or even sitting in your car.
Is teletherapy right for me?
Prior to any session, we would first discuss your needs via a brief and free phone consultation. We can decide together whether it might be to your benefit to engage in online sessions. Of course, if at anytime in the future you decide that it isn’t working for you, no problem! There’s no commitment – but you also won’t know for sure until you try it.
