Relationship Problems
Relationship problems are increasingly common throughout the US, and especially in NYC. The relationships people have may be the single most important factor in one’s sense of wellness and contentment. Sadly, loneliness is currently considered to be of epidemic proportions. It is one of the leading public health issues facing American society today.
Lack of supportive and healthy relationships is no small thing. In fact, it can directly contribute to blood pressure and heart problems, chronic anxiety and stress, sleep difficulties, and other physiological changes in the body. Further, once the body begins to adapt to a constant fight-flight state, it becomes even harder to build the very relationships we need in order to heal.
Sometimes factors such as too much stress, dysfunctional families of origin, trauma, career problems, money problems, previous rejection and loss, and/or a lack of self-worth and compassion can impact our ability to connect with and trust others.
Therapy can be helpful in providing a space where relationship is central. Many of the issues contributing to conflict or isolation can be addressed, worked through, and understood. In addition, therapy can be a space where skills in communication, vulnerability, and emotional expression can be honed.
